Hosting Q&A
What is web hosting?
Web hosting is the service of providing online storage space and access for websites. Once your website is on a server and made public, anyone with internet access can view it from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. Web hosting often also includes email service and hosting any databases used on the website as well.
What types of hosting are there and what do you offer?
While there are a large number of options out there we currently offer Cloud Hosting as our primary hosting option. It is safe, reliable, efficient, and scalable so it will handle just about any type of website. The most important benefit of cloud hosting is that your website is shared and stored over 100s of servers instead of just one. This way, if one server experiences downtime it does not affect your site. This also helps insure traffic spikes to your site do not hinder your visitors ability to navigate your website. We also offer VPS (Virtual Private Server) as well as Dedicated Server Hosting. These are priced based on the website’s need and are far more costly than a cloud hosting account.
How are the website files stored? Have you done anything to make it redundant?
Inside each storage device, drives are mirrored to each other in a RAID configuration to create a first level of redundancy. And, as a final precautionary measure, all data on the system is automatically backed up on a repeating schedule.
How often do you Backup Data?
The entire Cloud Sites FTP structure is backed up every four hours, which totals six daily backups. Those backups are rolled into a nightly backup, which are retained for two days. However, these backups are for disaster recovery on the server side. They are not typically accessible by the customer. If you are running a WordPress website we recommend you learn more about our WP Support service which gives your website the protection it needs to restore data anytime you need to.
